Hi Guys - very bizarre but I wrote this last week yet it hasn't made it into the guest book.

I may have not submitted it correctly or is it because I'm blonde?

I just wanted to say from my family and I how extremely touched we were on Friday and how lovely it was to meet you all - thank you so much for coming and giving Dad the send off he deserved.

Our lives will never be the same again and it has left a huge hole, but we try and rest in the knowledge that he is fit & well again and more than likely enjoying a post-match pint!

Someone recently said to me "When people die young we complain and feel that somehow life has been unfair to them. We may feel happier if someone has departed at a ripe old age. Maybe they got value for money? Yet surely it's quality - and not quantity of life that counts?"

Difficult though it is to digest, Dad always said what a good 'innings' he had and he certainly lived life to the full.

May all of you stay happy and don't forget the Dunnso!!!

With love
Em & family

Paul Dunn

SPONSORED TANDEM RIDE FROM CARNOUSTIE TO COVENTRY STARTING SUNDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER & ENDING AT THE ROYAL COURT HOTEL ON THE FIRST DAY OF REUNION

Stan Bowles & Ron Allen, backed up by Keith (Devs) Devonald and accompanied by Tim Hardwick riding his own bike will be making this 400 mile ride in aid of the following:

1. Yeovil Hospital Macmillan Nurses
2. Pancreatic Cancer Society
3. St. Dunstans Summer Camp

This is to show our appreciation for the special treatment they gave to Paul Dunn during his illness.

Paul was full of praise for the way these people put themselves out to ensure his comfort and that of hisfamily. Therefore, it would be fitting if we, The Association, could raise as much money as possible for them, to show our appreciation for their efforts in looking after "One of our own."

Paul ran in 1970, 73 & 76. He was also the FAA, RN & Combined Services Rugby Captain during his Naval career and was loved as a Guy who would "Do Anything for anybody any time"

The first photo below shows Stan with the Tandem they will use. The second photo is the view that Ron will have for 400 miles and that alone must be worth a donation from you. Stan's wife, Nita, has promised to keep him off of Baked Beans for at least a week before they set off.

Ron has been working hard to raise Sponsorship and has contacted various Associations, Clubs & even the Navy News.

Please back them up in this "Challenge" and send your donations to Al Price at:

7 Edgecombe Crescent
Rowner
Gosport
Hants PO13 9RD

Cheques should be made payable to:
"Faa ex-field gun crew association"
marked for 'Bike Ride'

Any help or suggestions you may have (i.e. where Ron can buy a Gas Mask) please contact Stan Bowles at: ib010a2723@blueyonder.co.uk or Ron Allen at: seron@tublue.fsnet.co.uk

Gentlemen it is my sad duty to inform you that Paul Dunn passed away 0015 19.06.07.

Paul had a brilliant Naval Career starting in 1962 as a boy in HMS St Vincent. He ran three times for the FAA in '70-'73 and 76, keeping his hand in by running Brickwoods in '71 and '72.

Paul had the distinction of being the Captain of the RN Rugby Team from 1975 to 1980. This was eclipsed by being appointed Captain of the Combined Services Rugby Team from 1975 to 1978. For his contribution to Sport Paul was nominated RN Sportsman of the Year in 1977.

It wasn't just on the sports field that Paul excelled, he had 11 ships, served in the first Gulf War and was awarded the BEM and Meritorious Medal.

Paul married Sheila in 1972 with Emma and Craig being born in in 1975 and 1978 respectively.

It is at the Family's request that the service at the FAA Church, Yeovilton and later at the Crematorium be a private family affair. There will be a memorial service for Paul at a later date.

From Emma, Paul's Daughter.

Dear All
Well, as the good old fashioned grapevine goes, I am sure you'll have heard by now that Paul Dunn has gone to a better place to have a good game of Rugby and is more than likely doing his "Spotty Dogs" and "Star Jumps" as I type this!
He fought hard until the very bitter end, and as you all know he put every single ounce of effort into fighting it.
For those of you that haven't heard, I am so sorry to have to tell you this news in the form of an email, but I don't have contact numbers for everyone.
He was sadly admitted to hospital last Monday due to a speedy deterioration, even faster than he had envisaged, hence not touching base with any of you again.
One of the very last things he said to me was "Tell everyone I love them, Ems."
So I am passing on this loving wish to you, to let you all know that you were in his thoughts.
Thank you all so very much for all your love and support and for giving him that extra courage and strength to go on and fight as long as he did.
We are planning a memorial service for him at The Fleet Air Arm Church - St Bartholomew's followed by a celebration of his fantastic life at the Senior Rates Mess, and I will let you all know as soon as possible when.  Unfortunately what with Air Day celebrations and the Summer Ball it is proving difficult to arrange drinkies and accommodation at the mess so we are looking at either Friday 29th June or Friday 20th July.
TTFN Will keep you posted

My father, George Shattock, was a proud member of the FAA Field Gun Crew.

He retired from the Navy and with his family emigrated to Australia in 1974. He always had some funny tales to tell and in particular used to mention Jock Scott and Nobby Clark.

Sadly, he passed away last year. I wish I had found this site before he died as he would have loved to have caught up with the news and some old friends.

Most of you will have seen the news about the Government threat to reduce the number of operational units in the Royal Navy s surface fleet to 22 out of 44 and close another naval base. If not, see this link to the Daily Telegraph website (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/05/navy05.xml).

An online petition (http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/savethenavy/) to stop the destruction of the Royal Navy has been started on the No.10 website. While I have no illusions about the effectiveness of such gestures, I've signed it because it would be a shame if the number of signatures gives an impression of general apathy.

A far more effective course of action is to write to your MP, but do sign the petition too. I would be grateful if you would pass this on to others by any means available to you.

Yours aye,

Rob Hoole

Dear All,

Regarding the forthcoming Dubai Marathon on January 12th 2007

Alan Watkins, my stepfather, died suddenly on August 18th 2006, and many friends and family are still trying to come to terms with his untimely death at the age of 59yrs..

He was a man who had a zest for life, living life to the full, he was a caring, considerate, friendly and outgoing person who would always give help & support without question to anyone who needed it. He had many friends from all walks of life, from his Royal Navy days, to friends he met during his life abroad in Brunei & Bahrain and I consider myself privileged to have been a huge part in Alan's life. He had a tremendous impact on my life.

Together, Alan and Barbara did a lot of road running in the early years. For their honeymoon they entered....and completed the Paris marathon. Following that, they continued to run marathons for quite some years, they completed 2 London marathons, Bolton, Liverpool and the Aberdeen marathons. One of the marathons they ran, they decided to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, they raised enough money to buy and train a guide dog.

Alan inspired me to do many things and even now he has gone I am still being inspired by him. I have decided to follow in his footsteps and have entered the DUBAI Marathon on Jan 12th 2007. I will run the Dubai Marathon in memory of Alan Watkins and raise money for the same charity, Guide dogs for the Blind Association.

If you would like to donate to the charity I have set up a web page so you can, it is https://secure.justgiving.com/chrishoward please do not feel pressured into giving
anything just your support will carry me round the course.

Kind Regards
Chris Howard

Alan Watkins Memorial Service

Jimmy Andrews has just delivered a cheque for £560.00 generously donated by Barbara to the St Dunstans Summer Camp fund. This was raised at Alan's memorial service held on the 7 October 2006 and is a staggering amount of money.

I will, of course write to Barbara expressing my gratitude on behalf of the campers, but wished to take the opportunity to thank everyone who donated towards this cause. I will ensure that when we meet in July for our next camp, everyone will be reminded of the bond that still exists between members of the Fleet Air Arm Field Gun Association, their families and supporters past and present.

Many thanks to you all.

I am contacting on behalf of my father who is the navy in the 70's. His name is Kim Morgan but he was nicknamed Taff.

He spent some time serving on HMS Fearless in the fleet air arm air sea rescue where he was a winchman. He also competed in the field gun run.

I am trying to find anyone who knew my Dad during his time in the navy as it would make him so happy to regain contact with the friends he made during his time in the Navy.

I know my details are a little vague but i hope that they ring a bell with somebody somewhere. Please if you know anything at all do contact me. Jennifer Morgan.

Hi there.

This is Shady lanes partner Jayne. I am just writing to say thank you for the reception I received at the reunion in September. I felt i was priveledged to be a part of the reunion. Everyone made me feel welcome and it was great to meet many of the field gun crew that Justin knew. The hotel was A++ and the food delicious. It was great to hear the many stories of fireld gun activity and to take some contact numbers home with us to keep in touch. It really is a delight to see the passion for the fieldgun runs that everyone participated in some form or another. I hope all is well with everyone.

On behalf of myself and Alan's family, I would like to thank everyone for all their messages of synpathy, love and support at this sad time.

Alan was a wonderful man and I'm sure everyone will have their own personal great memories of him.

A church service was held here in Bahrain, (the same day as Nobbie's and I'm assured that not only did they have a tot for Nobbie but they had to go back to the bar and have one for Alan too!!).

Alan was dressed in his best......Field gun blazer and tie. It was a moving, fitting service with periods of chuckles during the 2 eulogies from very good friends. Hymns were Bread of Heaven and Peril on the sea, also the Naval Prayer. The coffin was taken out to the tunes "Heart of Oak" "Life on the ocean Waves" and "Prelude and Sunset". It was a lovely funeral with over 140 people there.

I plan to hold a memorial service for Alan in UK on Sat 7th Oct at St Peters Church, Stockbridge, Hants at 3pm. Jimmy Andrews has any details if you wish to contact him.

Alan has left a huge void not only in my life but in everyone who knew him, however I'm sure he is up there playing his golf and haveing a wee dram or two.

Hope to see some of you in Oct, Love to everyone, Barbara (Watkins)

On behalf of all of Nobby Clark's family, especially Jean, I would like to thank all the people associated with the FAAFGA who attended his funeral and or sent cards and letters of condolence.

As we arrived at the chapel it was heartwarming to see so many ex field gunners looking resplendent in their green blazers waiting to greet one of their own. I had visions of my dad standing and laughing amongst you in the sunshine.

Dad would have been gratified by the extraordinary warmth of feeling which was tangible during the service and he would have enjoyed the bag pipes and the rousing singing.

Field gunning was the joy of my father's life and by being with you all on Thursday I can understand why - you are unbeatable!

With thanks and kind regards.

Ode to Nobby

They came from near and far, mostly dressed in coats of gren.
They came to say farewell to one of theirs one of the chosen few, a sportsman, joker, Gunnie too, my God he was so keen.
Standing room only in the chapel as his crew mates carried him in, and carefully laid his coffin on the stand that within.
Pastor Mary made all welcome, and then there was ahymn, what else but Eternal Father to sing our praise to him.
A poem followed by his daughter Susan Gathergood, full of memories, praise and this helped to set the mood.
The Eulogy read by Al had lots of praise, some wit, and then more prayers, for those luckily enough to sit1
Then as the Committal began and the stillness became leaden, the sound of bagpipes filled the air as Scotty piped our favourite hymn, Yeas it was Bread of Heaven.
It was sung with pride and gusto to send Nobby on his way, and many a tear was shedon that Sad, Sad, day. R.I.P. Nobby.

I would just like to say how proud our family was on the day of Ted's funeral, 22 August 2006.

Four of the FAA guys turned up, along with the flag bearer. it was a very proud moment for our family seeing the guys.

And we would like to personally thank Trevor Wilkinson who helped Ted's family members to bear Ted's coffin. This was very fitting as Trevor ran with Ted in 1961 and also served in Poland with Ted.

Please can you personally pass on to the guys who attended Ted's funeral my Mum and our family gratitude. And also thank all whom contributed to the flowers sent by the FAA.

Thank you Josh.

On behalf of my Mum and Ted's family.

Kind regards Craig.

Tis a sad time, Nobby and Al departing this mortal coil.

I first met Nobby ("Tannoy") Clark in 1966 when for some unknown reason for part of his duties, he became Chief of the Main Gate at Lee. One night, "Red Swann, Mark Redgrave, Charlie Lewis and me went ashore and as we had handed in our station cards, Nobby's booming voice said; "You're alright Charlie. You three, if you're not back by midnight, I'm sending out a search party"

Nobby was (in my humble opinion) a member of the finest Field Gun Crew of all time. 1966 was an advert for Field Gun Running and I think that as a result the applications for 1967's Gun Crew were the most that had ever been made up till that time.

Al (Taff/Dobbin) Watkins I remember joining Portland in 1964, lovely lad, powerful, self effacing and in retrospect knew exactly what he wanted to do in his time in the "mob".

When he made the crew in 1965, he must have been the second youngest of all time after Tony "Buck" Ryan.

And now they've gone, wai man, but they make you feel mortal!

Just think, if there is an afterlife and they meet the lads who have gone before, a good few that I knew - then there's a bloody good FAA Gun Crew to run the "Astral Way"

They've joined marvellous lads who will never be forgotten: "Red" Lister ("Mr Wonderful") Tony "Percy" Proctor, George Bucksey, George Gilholm, Harry Silcock, Albert Hallam, Rick Pizzey, Jan Higgins, Ron Short, "Punchy" Stone, Jimmy Green, Bev Dixon, "Slam" Haslam, Danny Fitzsimons, Frank McFarlane. Looks like a good crew and back-up staff in the making.

Goodbye "Nobs & Dobs". No, that's not right.
See yers Nobby & Al, in the fullness of time.
God Bless, Pax Vobiscum.
G.

The news about Al Watkins has certainly shook me up a bit, Pete Westbrook called me 2150 on Friday, followed by a call from Jim Dale at 2200.

At 0730 Saturday morning I woke up, thought for a minute and then I posed a question to my bride "Did Peter call me last night?" "Yes" came the reply "He told you about Alan". OH! S**T I thought it was a bad dream". Even then I found it hard to believe.

Al will be sadly missed by all his friends, the effect on his wife Barbara and the family is very hard to imagine.

We now know that Alan will be buried on Thursday at 1100, just as many of us will be mustering in Porchester for Nobby's funeral. RIP Al, your friends will be thinking of you.

The news regarding Alan Watkins untimely death have put a great deal of sadness in a lot of folks minds. We spent a few years together in Brunei and then had many moments at re-unions, or Alan and Barbara's house neat Winchester, over the years.

I will remember, with a lot of laughs, the times on the golf courses at various locations throughout the world and Alans zest for the good things in life.

So sad.

"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on
Laughter silvered wings,
sunward I have climbed and joined
the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,
and done a hundred things
you have not dreamed of - wheeled and
soared and swung
high in the sunlit silence".

I am devastated to hear about my buddy Alan Watkins' death.

I spoke with his wife Barbara last night and tried to console as best I could.

It appears that funerals happen pretty quickly in that part of the world, but she will contact me soon regarding a future arrangement back here in UK later in the year.

I had the privilege to partner Alan in 1971 & 1974 as 'Second Pair', and, we had the Honour of being chosen for the action photo on the First Day Cover envelope issued in 1971.

He was a terrific Field Gunner and well respected by all around him. WE were BIG buddies for a long - long time, and my thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

RIP Dobbin mate.

Yours Aye,

Jimmy A.

More sad news. Alan Watkins (Dobbin) died this morning 1015 UK time 18 August. He was on a flight (Works Royal Flight) from Bahrain to
Geneva when he slumped in his seat and passed away.

Alan ran in four crews '65, '68, '71 and '74 always as 16. Our thoughts are with Barbara at this sad time. More info as I get it.
RIP Dobbin

Ted (Not Super) Dumican (Ran 1958 & 1961)

Ted's Family want all of Ted's Field Gunning friends to know the very sad news that at 4.20 am on Saturday 12th August, Ted peacefully Passed Away.

Ted was anxious that he should let his lifelong friends know, to which several days prior, Craig, Ted's son contacted John Godridge regarding Ted's ill health, and was informed that he would let all of Ted's friends know as soon as possible. This somehow seems to have not happened, due to e-mails or calls being received.

Ted's family have now spoken directly with Josh, and would like to thank him for his prompt response in letting all of Ted's friends know the sad news.

We will keep Josh informed with details of the funeral, which will possibly be Tuesday 22nd August in Bradford West Yorkshire, this will be confirmed within the next 24 hours.

Ted's family would appreciate the attendance, as would Ted of his Field Gunner friends at his funeral.

Once again we are sorry to be sharing with you this sad and belated news, but we were informed and assured by John Godridge that all his friends would, and had been made aware.

Thank You
Craig, Ted's Son and Ted's Family.

Hello all, Im a ex-Bolton field gunner had many happy times running at the navy bases each year with the FAA. It was a sad day in 1999 when the navy last run at Earls Court and field gun would never again don a big arena...until now.

Greater Manchester Field gun (command drill but no 28ft spar)is running at the Manchester Military Tattoo on Saturday 29th July. For more information visit http://www.fieldgun.co.uk/webpages/Tattoo_current/index.htm

I watched the FAA gunners training in 57,62,65 & 66 at the end of the camp next to the old POs mess and finally got to Earls Court for the final run in 99.

Sad to see the end of a great tradition.

Reading thro the previous entries, I am surprised that no one has mentioned the great work the gunners did by entertaining the St Dunstans veterans at Lee after Earls Court was over each year. I managed to work a ticket (cost a few tots) for 2 late leave chits, 62 in the POS Mess and 65 in the Chiefs Mess and it always surprised me how the hell you fit gunners managed to run round the airfield being dragged by your guest on the last day of the St Dunstans stay, having had to be up all hours until the bar closed when the last guest departed /dropped.

It was a privilege to drink with you. Its a disgrace the way the MOD has almost grounded the Air Arm. Lets live in hope that one day we will have a proper Navy and enough men to form gun teams again.

( The St. Dunstans Summer Camp is still running, although it now takes place at HMS Sultan.

Ex- Fleet Air Arm Field Gunners still volunteer each year to be "Dogs" at the camp and in the cases of Kevin Rixon & Chipper Stilton they have been attending each year for over 30 years now.

The Camp is organised by Dave Burrows, who ran in 1977/78/83/88/89/90 - 2 in 1977/78/82, 2nd Trainer 1988, First Trainer 1989, OA in 1990.

There is always a shortage of "Dogs" so if you can spare a day,2 days or a week to help each/any year please contact Dave direct at DCB119399@aol.com; - Josh)

Just thought I'd let you know there's hope for all of you, Dad (82) is now recovering well from his recent quuadruple heart bypass, was a little touch & go for awhile, but he's doing real well now, walking more than he has in years! For some reason he's now taken a liking to Stella (the drink), do old habits never die! Anyway this year I'm hoping that should all go well I may just get him to the reunion. Gentlemen

The young men of Wellington College Field Gun Crew will make an early start to their season this year, in order to be able to invite you all in for the Saturday morning training session on the way to the Army V Navy game at Twickenham.

The Field Gun Officer, Bruce Roth, is keen to cement the affiliation between the 'Men of Air' and the college, who are aiming to prolong the tradition of field gunning in the form we all have grown to love, for many years to come.

Crews have been trained at the college for many years by Kev Clarke, who ran for Air back in 1983, using equipment manufactured by themselves from whatever they could muster!

In 2000, Bruce took a low loader to Culdrose and rescued most of our old running gear, six years later it is still being put to good use!

The crews run on a full size identical 'Earls Court' size track with original running gear, with the exception of the gun, limber and wheels, which are fully authentic, but scaled down in size and weight.

The guys train for six weeks after Easter, culminating in a white front run to their inspecting officer on 'Speech Day'. In the past this event has been supported and attended by a few of our ex-members, notably the committee and Davie Glover. This year the inspecting officer will be Sir Michael Parker, Musical Director of the Royal Tournament for many years.

So then, weather permitting, the college would like to offer an alternative breakfast/brunch location to Fleet Services!! The Boss has committed to arranging tea/coffee and bacon sandwiches, if we can let him know numbers. It will be a 15 minute diversion off of the M3, and the college are going to signpost the route.

Should this prove popular this year, then the college would like to make it a regular part of the Army/Navy weekend.

The training session would start at 9AM and complete at midday. All welcome.See photos below.

My Dad Tony (buck) Ryan, ran in 1965/68 and 1971 crew. He had these and other medals/trophies stolen (such as boxing belt) prior to leaving the navy.

I am hoping that someone out there can put me intouch with where I can get replicas (or the real thing at a reasonable offer!)he has always been satisfied that his memory is enough and hasn't needed medals, maybe the memories are starting to fade I dunno but he actually spoke about his regret not chasing up the retriveal of these stolen medals the other day.

I have once before been in touch with Mr Andrews about this but never followed it up. is there anyone out there can help? cheers xXx

Tom Mollitt   <

I am a retired United States Naval Officer. I was stationed with the Royal Navy at HMS Daedalus as an Instructor in electronics.

I was an Exchange Officer. I was there from 1989-1991.

I enjoyed watching the Field Gunners practice for the Royal Tournament and to this day, show everyone I speak with a video about the austere group. I have pratically worn it out showing it.

If anyone would like to correspond with me, my
E-Mail address is attached. If you are ever in Las Vegas, Nevada, look me up.

Come on the Air Arm

David Lowing
Sirs: I now live in the USA. Having been born and raised in the UK, I well remember the Royal Tournament being televised. I particulaly looked forward to the field gun exercise.

I think it a shame that it has been dropped as part of the tournament. This is a part of the English heritage and would hope one day I can bring my children to England and watch the field gun crew once more.

John McCormick
Field Gun Officer 1965

Eric (Rocky) Fortune
Sorry folks but I ran for Devonport 1962, 1965 & 1968, fast wheels. However, I must congratulate you on this site, many thanks. As we get older remember that all of us went through the same hoop :-)
(This site was created in the true spirit of Field Gunning and therefore welcomes visits from ALL Field Gunners - thanks for your comments - Josh)

Sam "Taff" Clues
Hi Josh,

Although I am an ex Pompey Field Gunner (also PT Staff at Daedalus 82 & 84/5) I wish to say that you have a fine Web Site, well done. I now live in Florida, on the Gulf Coast. Lenny Ashmore, ex FAA, also lives here, in South Florida, I will send him your Web Site Link.

I recently wrote a poem about the end of the Field Gun Competition, it is dedicated to ALL Field Gunners everywhere. If you know of any ex Field Gunners living in Florida pass me Email address to them please.

The Final Run Home
(by Sam Clues, copywrite 1999)

One ton of metal
Over one ton of years
Has plenty of memories
With even some tears

The Field Gun Tradition
Is ceasing to stride
But gunners the world over
Will always feel pride

All Crews have performed
With fine efforts abound
And always the public
We never fail to astound

Out, Back & Home
Were the Trainers demands
So to keep each run steady
We'd obey his commands

On all of the tracks
The dust will now settle
And soon the equipment
Will be rust covered metal

So what of the Summers
From this year on
There'll be little to do
Now that Field Gun is gone

Re-unions will follow
With that I am cetain
But will many turn up
After this final curtain

Earls Court is ending
There's no new domain
We must find a venue
So the race can remain

The arena's now empty
And each crew is done
So sadly no more
Will we see the "Gun Run"

Now the Crews will be waiting
For the buglers' tone
To send them forever
On that final RUN HOME!

Pete AXCELL
Hi all is going well I wish I could make it back from Arizona to see you all. Its dam hot here, but great, best of luck
Pete

Gina Bradshaw
Discovering this site was a fluke but will definitely check in again.

The Field Gun Competition has meant so much to so many of us, both within and outwith the service. IT WILL BE A TRAGEDY IF IT IS ALLOWED TO DISSAPPEAR.

Derrick Pearce M.B.E.
Having been the Secretary of the Oggies for the last eight years I wanted to compliment you on a very good Web Site. I used it regularly to keep up with the results.

What a shame it all had to end. I put the blame entirely on this government who are creating the image of a COOL BRITANIA as we go into the millennium and tradition has no part. The Queen herself is being put in the background by the American style of Presidential politics.

Devonport have had an exceptional year, with a very experienced crew, with quite a few over 40 years of age, which shows that experience has a part to play. Pity we could not get a R.N. Field Gun Association as I feel that might help keep things alive, when we have no trackside to meet at, but I understand peoples loyalties to their home team and I hope it keeps going.

Chrissy Hill
I think it's a crime that the race has been stopped... did you all wear the black arm bands?

I wish I could have been there

Nick Purkis
What a waste and a scandal that the Governtment has scrapped the Field Gun Competition!

Well done to all on an excellent performance over the last few years.

Jim Greenhill
ex pompey field gunner 1972-surprised pompey hasn't got a site?

Craig Rayner
Hello from Craig No 8 and Daz No 7 at Bolton Youth Field Gun Crew.

Glen Moon

Thanks for the creation of this Web Site. It took me almost twenty years to find it and it enabled me to track down some old friends.

Although I never made it as a Field Gunner I have fond memories of the training, dedication and hard work that was required to make it as a Field Gunner. As a member of the Fleet Air Arm 1978 - 1982 I was lucky enough to know people who thought so highly of this organisation and knew first hand what it meant to be one of the few who made it to Earls Court.

I had a couple of Fleet Air Arm Field Gun green tracksuits, the same type used by the Crew, they lasted almost two decades but have finally ended up in rags. Anyone out there who could tell me where I could buy some more??

Thanks,

Glen Moon - Amherst, Mass. USA

A Field Gunners Poem

We are those of the gun my friend
Those who are trusted and true
We tackle the wall and the bottomless gorge
To get the twelve-pounder through

It's pins and it's shackles and pulleys
It's lashings it's ropes and it's spars
And it's burns from the ropes and it's bones that are broke
And it's cuts and it's tears and it's scars

But the real prize that we gain is not silver or gold
or a trophy to put in the mess
No - that which we won was the steel of the gun
And in knowing we gave our best

Runnin' the gun is like running with life
With the damage and the loss that we take
And the walls that we storm and the chasms we cross
When the rope takes the mind of a snake

You may bleed and be torn with your back to the load
You may stumble and yet rise again
And the silver and gold may just pass you by
And your prizes may only be pain

But a Gunner you are and a Gunner you'll stay
In this life forever you'll run
Storm the walls - Span the gorge with the will that you have
And the gear and limber and gun.

Written as a dedication to all Field Gunners, past, present and to come

FINALE

The empire has crumbled
A century of tradition has passed
To the generations of Gunners
Make sure that those memories last

Reflect and smile when you hear Hearts of Oak
Remember the blood, sweat and tears
Feel the strain on the ropes hear the bugle's call
And remember the respect, the awe and the cheers

So fare ye well Gunners red blue and green
We've had our day in the sun
But never forget whatever you do
To be proud to have run with the gun

I was very disappointed to learn that the Royal Tournament has come to an end. In 1963, as a member of the Fort Henry Guard from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, I participated in the tournament and watched each day's gun competitions when our part was over. It was an amazing spectacle.

I was a member of the Bolton Field Gun Crew, and loved going down to the base each year with the lads and wish gunners were still up and runing. I was there in London when the last run took place it was a good but also a sad day of my life. Gunners is one of the best things I,ve ever taken part in. I ran in the gun crew for 3 years (second swing on to first swing then the flying angel) In my last year along with being the flying angel I was the captain of the team. I live in hope that Field gun will kick back up. P.S say Hi to Don minter for me.

Scrolling through all the wonderful comments and getting quite nostagic as the mother of a ex-FAA Field Gunner, Scott Elleman, I came across one from a chap now living in Florida. Congrats on a terrific site Josh! What a treat to stumble upon it while just browsing. It's the biggest shame in the World that the FG Comp is finished, as it was a special event for many people - gunners and others. A crew [No 4] "Up and at 'em Chatham!"

What a excellant website and way to catch up on old names and faces.I only ran three times and my body is riddled with aches and pains but i have no regrets i still dream about it all now.Its just a shame we are deprived of our turn to place a well established belly on the fence and tell others how it was done in our day. I was at Daedalus last year and looked over the fence at the track. It brought back a few memories i can tell you and nearly a few tears.Well i am now a police officer in North Devon having completed four years policing in Birmingham. i have just bought a cottage and recieved the title deeds today. The woods behind are called "hearts of oak" it was obviously meant to be. Anyone over in this area please do contact me for a few beers or just drop me a line at the above hot mail site

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about Ed (I think his surname may have been Curtis but I could be making that up) who was in the Fleet Air Arm crew based at HMS Daedalus in 1976. My ex-husband recently moved house and asked me if I wanted some of my belongings which years later were still in his loft! I told him to throw them away as I'd mamnaged without them for so long but as he'd realised there were letters among the belongingds from my late Dad, he insisted I had them. Among the contents were loads of really chatty letters from Ed, Eddie and Edward - we were just good mates. He had great plans (I think he went off on an unauthorised trip to Moscow!0 and I was 18 and just starting my career as a journalist. Reading the letters brought back lots of memories and I wonder how he is - happy and fulfilled I hope.
If anyone who is still intouch with him reads this, please tell him I have a lovely husband and three beautiful daughters after a great career in television public realtions... but reading those letters took me back to carefree days!!!
Best wishes
Diane Perry

First Field Gun site I've found since becoming computer literate about 20 minutes ago, couldn't resist an entry.I was as sad as the rest of you when Earls Court passed into the history books,we certainly filled some chapters didn't we.Best of luck to everybody, blue green or red.

FIRST & LAST (FAA Gun Runner!)
Is there anybody else out there who can boast of this. Phil Bland, my father, took part in the 1st(1947)and last Tournament when all the 'OLD Boys'were invited back. Apparently the FAA crew of 47 made the fastest time, although didn't go on to win overall. Which of course wasn't his fault but all them others!
Anyway Phil Bland will be 81 on March the 11th and still pretty damn fit. He has many tales to tell and a number of photos, his particular favorite is of him dressed in full regalia as a Piper, this apparently was on the Saturday when everybody would change clothes with the massed bands, (don't they have large Sporrans!)whether this was done in a sober frame of mind I'm not quite sure. Anyway he's a great man, a true gentleman who has become quite a fascination, he ended up as a Falconer and breeder and only gave this up last year. What I would love is to get him to come to this years reunion (04) but he believes an old boy like him won't really be wanted & that he'll be out of place. So Please, please if any of the Members Committee read this will u write him a letter asking him to come along. He had a great time, if emotional, at the last Tournament and I know he would at a reunion, this cud be his last chance, so please, please somebody somewhere ask him. By the way we run an open house and he has a great collection of Malt, so if anybody wants to drop in on an OLD BOY, just let me know. Penny Bland

What a great site. My son, Mal Campbell ran for Fleet Air arm Gun crew, and had an excellent time. Memories!!! Best wishes to all FAA Field Gunners and their families too.

Having left the FAA some 6 years ago I found myself discussing the field gun ethos with my work colleagues during an afternoon coffee break.
Having been a member of the 1990 crew, the discussions renewed my interests in obtaining any information about the season.

Hi there
Just wondered whether Mac McShane is out there and if he could drop us a note. Plus anybody else who knows me.

Pat
Sorry to but in on your site but as an ex Oggie I feel that any ex field gunner might be in a similar position. So If you have been injured during service and are having problems with MoD /Veterans agency you might want to check out the message boards (shame of a para) on www.2para.co.uk. There are a few lads trying to get some level of redress for ex service and they could use any input you may have. Many thanks. Pat

Hi, I'm Bryn. I'm a young gunner only 14. I go to Wellington and I'm in their Field Gun Crew. I'm 18 Barrel number A Crew. We did a run yesterday for our Speech Day (29th May 2004). My Trainer used to be in the Fleet Air Arm Crew, not sure when, but his name is Kev Clarke. When I was about 11 I went to the Royal Tournament and saw the Field Gun. I thought it was amazing and have always loved it.

Below are photos taken on 29th May 2004 at Wellington College. The Association maintains a close contact by attending their Annual Families Day and enjoy watching the lads perform, very impressively, a few live runs.
